Tethered

2020

Inspired by my late Grandma, Anne - incredible grandparent and teacher, and fierce lover of painting.
In pursuing art as a career, I absolutely feel I’m living the life she wished she could have had.
Tethered is my love letter to her.

“To my darling Grandchildren, whom I love so much that I feel as if I could huggle you everytime I see you until I burst with joy and emotion.

The thing I wish to happen is that I would be around to see you grow into adulthood, to see what you do and what you will become, but that is not possible.

On the morning of your twenty-first birthdays I would like you to give me a thought and I wonder what you will have to say.”

- Anne Manners (My Grandma)

Tethered 2020

Paper, fabric, thread

Tethered is a graphic novel dedicated to my late Grandma. The book is two parallel stories - the day of my 21st birthday, intertwined with excerpts of my Grandma’s life and milestones. The book was made in response to a letter from her to the Grandkids I found 7 years after she passed.

I found this letter a few weeks before my twenty-first birthday.

At the end of the book is a reversible zine. On one side of the zine is an illustrated version of my Grandma’s letter, and on the other side is my illustrated response.
